ACROSS-BAM February to May 2004 Recce Team: [1] Dr Michael Lim [2] Michael Teh Background:A devastating earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the ancient city of Bam in the early hours of 26 December 2003. The earthquake claimed about 40, 000 lives. Many families had lost at least a family member, and some were sole survivors in their families. 85% of the houses were destroyed in the earthquake. Relief Help: ACROSS and CRS (Crisis Relief Society) partnered to help the people of Bam. A weekly food distribution was done at Bafia Camp. Bafia Camp has 2000 survivors and some of the food items that were distributed included rice, potatoes, noodles, canned foods, beans, dried food, tea leaves.
